Relaxation drinks are the newest wave in mood altering beverages

Normally I just reach for a hot cup of chamomile tea or a bottle of Nighttime Nyquil when I want to relax, but it seems the choice has been narrowed down even further. Normally I just reach for a hot cup of chamomile tea or a bottle of Nighttime Nyquil when I want to relax, but it seems the choice has been narrowed down even further. I’m talking about the newest trend in mood altering beverages: the relaxation drink.

Yes, the new relaxation drinks are helping people chill out without the use of alcohol, codeine, or valium.

The Michigan-based products are known as Marley's Mellow Mood, Unwind and Drank, all of which can be found in Jackson.

"I like to almost call it the anti-energy drink," said Paul Fuegner, Marley Beverage Co. chief marketing officer. "It's not a slam to the energy drink, it's a complement to it. It's an alternative to all that hyped-up, amped-up energy, and … I think we all can use that in these crazy times."

"Everybody is buying them," said Meezo Saleh, who manages Meezo Express, adding that he's tried the drinks himself and keeps a consistent supply. "A lot of people are liking the Bob Marley drink more than anything. It releases tension and it relaxes you. It really does the job."

Relaxation drinks all have the same purpose, but each is designed to suit a different taste.

Drank is carbonated and berry flavored. Unwind features three lightly-carbonated flavors: Goji Grape, Pom Berry and Citrus Orange. Lastly, Marley's Mellow Mood, which carries the name of reggae icon Bob Marley, comes in Peach Raspberry Passion Fruit Black Tea, Green Tea with Honey, Citrus Soda and Berry Soda.

Canada Dry Bottling Co. of Lansing is marketing and distributing all three. So far, the biggest response has been generated from the age 18-35 demographic.

"It really has started taking off a lot more than anybody anticipated," said James Decatur, Canada Dry director of sales.

"It's a convenient way to unwind after a long day," said Brian Breen, Canada Dry project manager, about Unwind, a 40-calorie drink with 10 grams of sugar.

How counterintuitive of the beverage industry, first it was uppers, now it’s downers. I hope these people realize mixing energy drinks with relaxation drinks is bad for your body, because you know people are dumb enough to consume one of each in a day. The human body won’t know if it’s coming or going.
