Following in the footsteps of its western United States counterpart, San Francisco, a Superior City Council member wants to ban free toys given with children's fast food meals.

This means kids in the Midwest City won’t be able to enjoy Transformers figurines, Barbie dolls or Shrek collectables to accompany them as they eat their McDonald’s Happy Meals or other kids’ meals.

Councilor Greg Mertzig has gone on record of comparing the free toys to candy cigarettes -- a marketing tactic to lure young children into unhealthy habits. Mertzig says obesity is a serious issue for the nation and young people.

Mirroring that of the law passed in San Francisco just a few weeks ago, Mertzig feels his motion would ban free toys in meals with more than 600 calories, 10 percent fat or any transfat.

Can I just get on my soapbox here real quick? Can we all agree that this is all absolutely ludicrous and the toys are not the problem, but the food is? I mean, Happy Meal food doesn’t even decompose when left in the sun for crying out loud, and they have a problem with the toys?

I know they have a solution and that involves serving healthier food, but that’s just it, you solved the problem right there! Stop interfering with our lives and trying to take over as parents, if we want our children to enjoy a little trinket they get with their meal, it shouldn’t be up to the government to decide that. Get out of our heads and out of our homes. I will assume the role as my kids’ mom, not you Wisconsin or California!
