36 million pounds of ground turkey are being recalled by Cargill as dozens of consumers fall ill with salmonella

Last night major national meat producer Cargill issued an immediate Class I voluntary recall on 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey products processed at the brand’s facility in Springdale, AR, after being linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak that has killed at least one person thus far and sickened over 75 more. The scope of the recall encompasses turkey products released between February 20 and August 2 of this year, and is being referred to as one of the biggest ever of its kind.

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is still conducting an ongoing investigation into the Salmonella Heidelberg contamination that has afflicted so many over the last few months. As a precautionary move, however, Cargill has suspended all further production at its Springdale plant until experts are able to pinpoint the source of the contamination and properly correct the problem.

“Suspending production until we can determine the source of the Salmonella Heidelberg at our Arkansas facility, and take corrective action, is the right thing to do,” stated Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill’s turkey processing business, in an official press release. “We are closely examining every aspect of our production process and have identified enhancements to our procedures in our efforts to ensure safe food. Eliminating food borne illness is always our goal.”

According to the CDC, cases of Salmonella Heidelberg linked to this recall have been reported every month since February, with an upswing in May and June. Salmonella Heidelberg is a particularly antibiotic-resistant type of Salmonella, making it more difficult to treat than other strains. The CDC has reported that 38 percent of those afflicted with the illness were hospitalized.
