It’s that time of the year again: time for Restaurant Magazine to announce the winners of its 10th Annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards. Restaurants around the world were honored for their contributions to innovative cuisine, but only one can come out on top. Well on its way to following in the footsteps of five time winner elBulli, this year’s winner for the third year in a row is cutting-edge Danish restaurant Noma.
“The standard bearer for the New Nordic movement, Redzepi’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach has enabled Noma to maintain its position at the coveted top spot of the list,” reads a press release from the awards of the James Beard Award-winning chef and his rustic foraging-based restaurant.

The top ten didn’t change too much from last year: Spain’s El Celler De Can Roca and Mugaritz once again claimed second and third place, respectively. D.O.M. in Sao Paulo ascended three spots to number 4, taking the Best in South America prize; meanwhile Thomas Keller’s New York-based Per Se rose four spots to number six, beating out Chicago molecular gastronomy staple Alinea for Best in the USA. But elBulli’s closing and an eight-point drop in rank of Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck left room for two newcomers in the top ten circle – NYC’s Eleven Madison Park (up four places from last year) and the brand new Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which set a new record for Highest New Entry, probably more than making up for the whole Fat Duck thing.
Other notable entries include Sydney’s Quay, ranked Best in Australia, as well as Iggy’s in Singapore which edged out last year’s winner (Tokyo’s Les Creation de Narisawa) for the 2012 title of Best in Asia. The Ledbury in London earned a different honor as the Highest Climber, rising an impressive 20 points from last year’s rank of 34 – perhaps in 2013 it will be the one to crack the top ten.
