The hits keep on coming for Chick-Fil-A, as is wont to happen when your company’s president gets outspoken on the increasingly unpopular side of a polarizing argument. Last week, to Chick-Fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy made several remarks outlining that that he and his company are “guilty as charged” when it comes to opposing same-sex marriage, and furthermore that the increasing acceptance of same sex relationships “[invites] God’s judgment on our nation.” Boston mayor Thomas Menino promptly responded by letting everyone know that Chick-Fil-A isn’t welcome in his fine city. Not long after, The Jim Henson Company has also responded by not only ending its year-long licensing partnership with the chain, but giving the payment it received for the partnership to a cause that should make Chick-Fil-A pleased as punch.
According to reports, the Jim Henson Company has partnered with Chick-Fil-A since last Fall, allowing the chain to use its Pajanimals as mascots for its kids’ meals. But not anymore, according to an official statement posted on the Jim Henson Company’s Facebook page:
The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD. (http://www.glaad.org/)
Choosing to end a partnership makes a statement, but the Jim Henson Company’s decision to donate its entire payment from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD (AKA the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) really drives the point home. Sounds like Chick-Fil-A is going to have to find a new kids’ meals mascot – perhaps the Veggie Tales aren’t busy?
Meanwhile, In-N-Out and its unobtrusive Proverbs 3:5 milkshake cups continue to stay deliciously silent on the issue.
And now, because we love you, here is a rendition of Rainbow Connection as interpreted by Project Runway runner-up Austin Scarlett:
