Starbucks Coffee Free for Earth Day

If you've got the reusable travel mug, Starbucks has the fresh coffee in celebration of Earth Day

We’re still deep in Earth Week, and today is the official Earth Day we’ve been waiting for. If you’re still not sure how you’re celebrating Earth Day this year, how about some delicious free coffee? Starbucks is inviting customers to participating stores for up to 31 oz of fresh brewed tea or Starbucks coffee, your choice of hot or iced. There’s just one catch: you’ll need your reusable travel mug to reap the benefits. It’s not just free Starbucks coffee for everyone, so much as a little reward from Starbucks to those who do their part to make a difference.

“Why are we doing this?” read a post on the Starbucks blog last week. “We recognize the impact one can make through careful, conscious choices. So we want to encourage and reward those of you who use tumblers or travel mugs in your daily routines. You’re helping to reduce our environmental impact!”

That impact isn’t just theoretical, either. Starbucks took note of the impressive results of last year’s Earth Day promotion. “In 2010, people brought their own tumblers into our stores more than 32 million times, keeping nearly 1.45 million pounds of paper out of landfills.”

Don’t own a reusable travel mug yet? Starbucks is also offering a 20 percent discount on their reusable travel mug stock. If you have your heart set on a travel mug Starbucks doesn’t carry (or if you just left yours at home), participating Starbucks stores are offering free Starbucks coffee in-house as well, in a warm Starbucks ceramic mug. Sure, it requires a little more time out of your day, but that’s not such a bad thing. After all, it’s Friday. So take an extra twenty minutes to sit down at Starbucks and enjoy it. The earth will thank you.
