For years, California residents have been subjected to tantalizing Dunkin’ Donuts ads on television. We’re told that the world runs on Dunkin’, and with locations in over thirty countries it’s kind of true, but the United States is a land divided when it comes to the Massachusetts-based brand. After failing to launch successfully here in the past, Dunkin’ moved on to greener pastures back East and overseas. That’s fine, of course. We’ve got In-N-Out, after all, and more delicious regional donut chains than we can count. (Go Winchell’s!) But those Dunkin’ Donuts ads continue to pique our curiosity nonetheless, and it’s all been leading up to this moment: the moment when Boston Business Journal reports that Dunkin’ Donuts is re-launching in California.
But is it true? Or are we jumping the

BBJ reporter Julie M. Donnelly broke the news on Tuesday that Dunkin’ Donuts was making good on a former promise to re-enter California. Donnelly caught wind from a Massachusetts friend living at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base just north of San Diego County, that it might be the target for the franchise:
Today, a friend from Massachusetts who lives at Camp Pendleton – his wife is a military doctor – excitedly posted on Facebook that the San Diego country military base would soon be getting a Dunkin’’ Donuts.
Lo and behold, the Facebook page for MCCS Camp Pendleton, the food service there, included a job posting that read:
“Want to be a part of the 1st Dunkin’ in CA? Looking to Higher Management positions! Please contact us at email@example.com”
That sounds great! But alas, we’re unconvinced. First of all, why is Dunkin’ Donuts using a Yahoo! account to solicit applications? The brand usually uses its job board to recruit. We would buy that it’s a secrecy thing, but the jig is up once you mention Dunkin’ in the first sentence. Second of all, is Dunkin’ Donuts looking to hire management positions or are they looking to fill higher management positions? Accidental typos happen all the time, but something about it sets off our Craigslist scam/spam alarm. Third, we checked the MCCS Camp Pendleton Facebook page, and could not find the quote anywhere. Sure, that could be for any number of reasons. Still – curious.
It’s not that we don’t want it to be true. (Not only do we want it, but we want civilian San Diego to be next on the location list!). It’s just that we’ve been burned by too-good-to-be-true rumors before. We hate to be Doubting Thomases here, but we’ll believe it when we hear it straight from the Donut’s mouth. So far, it’s not talking.
